My wife can do that!
Every so often I run into a prospective client that asks, “Why do I need to hire you? My wife can pick out paint colors and decorate the office just fine, and she works a lot cheaper, too!” Well, that may be true, but as the cliche goes, “You get what you pay for.” What my prospect is most likely not getting from his wife (no offense ladies, but I’ve never had any of my female clients tell me they don’t need to hire me because their husband can decorate the office) is any in depth space planning or ergonomic evaluations. Additionally, few outside of the trade have access to the commercial furnishing that are needed to handle the wear and tear of an active dental practice. Just running over to the local discount furniture store and picking out a sofa and some chairs is fine if you want to replace the furniture every year or risk having it break under the weight of a larger patient sitting on it. Residential furniture just isn’t designed to handle the stress of a commercial environment. If one wants an efficiently planned space, that minimizes wasted motion, reduces employee fatigue and risk of repetitive use injuries all within an attractive package that produces a pre-planned emotional response that is consistent with the practice’s branding and marketing message, then perhaps one needs to hire a professional rather than just getting the spouse to “decorate.”
